Using the Sylo pen
How do I use the Sylo pen?
See 'Applications' on this website. Always read the entire instructions before use.
1. First, ask the person you are treating to consciously relax the treatment area by consciously releasing the muscle.
2. With your finger, find the spot where the trigger point is located and/or where you feel (muscle) tension.
3. With a pen grip, grasp the Sylo pen in the middle, between the second and third raised areas (see Figure 1).
4. Then, ask the person again to consciously relax the muscle you want to treat with the Sylo pen.
5. Hold the Sylo pen perpendicular to the area you want to treat and touch the tip to the skin.
6. Following this light pressure, press twice in quick succession, ensuring the tip of the Sylo pen does not come off the skin. The pressure you apply should not be painful. Note: start very gently at first; you can always increase the pressure in consultation with the person being treated.
7. The affected area may be slightly tender; this is not unusual. You should wait until the tenderness has subsided before moving on to the next area of the skin; never treat the same area more than once.
8. A (un)intentional muscle contraction, a twitch, may occur during the stroke and is not alarming.
9. Before using the Sylo pen on another area, ask the person to consciously relax the muscle again. Continue with point 2.
10. Please note: you may experience a small bruise afterward. This will heal within one to two weeks. If not, consult a doctor.
11. Initially, do not treat the same area of the skin more than once a week. The tissue needs time to recover and adapt. This can be increased to twice a week or even daily.

How do I know where the muscles and trigger points are in my body?
Via the app: Muscle Trigger Points, you can see where the pain is located for each muscle; this is the blue area. You can also see where the trigger point is located; this is the blue cross in the muscle. This is the area where you should treat. More and more videos are appearing on the website, covering various complaints and explaining where to treat.
How do I get more information about trigger points?
There's a great book with a wealth of information: Handbook of Trigger Point Therapy; Reduce Pain Yourself by Clair Davies (9789069635965) or e-book. See the "Applications" section on the website for videos explaining the treatment for each symptom.
Why do I need to relax before using the Sylo pen?
Due to the relaxation, the muscle is also relaxed, which means that the treatment has a better effect and is also less painful.
I can stretch my muscles to make them more flexible, so I don't need a Sylo pen, do I?
Stretching exercises are very beneficial. It's just difficult to loosen connective tissue or muscles that are too tense through stretching. First, feel with your fingers where there's tension in a muscle or connective tissue. Then, use the Sylo pen to treat this area(s). Then, gently stretch for 30 seconds. This should certainly provide a stretch, but it shouldn't be painful.

How often can you treat?

How hard should I hit the Sylo pen?

Can I activate multiple points in a muscle?
If there's no tenderness, you can strike a different spot in the muscle belly more often. If there's minimal tenderness that disappears immediately, you can also strike a different spot in the muscle belly more often.
Is it bad if the muscle contracts for a moment when I use the Sylo pen?
No, that's not a problem. That's called a twitch. This happens, just like with dry needling, because the muscle is briefly triggered.
